Hi! If you want a professional lesson, pick a nice day and drive over to see Jesse at Vic’s Gold Panning, just down CO-119 from Blackhawk. He doesn’t close so early!

Another great option is to join my FB group and ask about other locals near you. They ARE out there!

Hi Kevin.
I bought a couple of gold pans years ago when I moved to Colorado. They have mostly sat idle until this extended period of being laid off from work. I have been out a few time just playing around, but would really like to learn how to pan properly. Unfortunately it is too late in the year to go to one of the tourist spots that teach you. They seem to offer lessons through October. I've looked into the clubs, but I live in Eagle. I don't want to have to drive to Denver or the Springs. I have just inquired about joining the GJ Club, but that is still so far away from me.

Do you ever head over to this side of the mountain to pan? Do you know of any others in this area who are active?

Bought your book, have the bug, have the pans. What next? Can you help me? Anyone else out there?

Thanks!

I'm so glad you found something that works well for you. I've talked with several members of that club who are quite loyal and enthusiastic about it :)

Note: you mentioned an unauthorized/disputed link to another group on Facebook so I deleted it. Hope you don't mind.

Howdy Kevin!

Found your blog through someone posting a link to your latest blog on FB. Good info here; thanks for sharing.

I've been a lifelong rockhound, but never got interested in joining a club until stationed in Colorado 5 years ago. One thing I found while doing research on clubs is many of them are more focused on the workings of the club than the activity the club is based around. Drama on elections and inter-club cliques taking away from enjoying why they all come together.

One of the clubs I looked in to was Colorado Prospector. What intrigued me was the focus of the club isn't about having formal meetings, following Robert's Rules of Order, elections, drama, and all the rest I've seen from many clubs (I'm sure there are good ones out there). The foundation of the club is teaching folks how to do their own research and from there either taking advantage of OUR public lands and prospecting on public land or filing your own claim. There are no club claims, though there are several club members who open their claims to club members (usually with unrestricted access to lifetime members and several invitational get togethers a year to annual members).

I initially joined as an annual member, but once I get to know the folks in the club, I knew I had found a group of like-minded folks who I wanted to spend more time with and a month later upgraded to a lifetime membership. Since doing so, after an invite to a club member's gold claim, where I went just to poke around for rocks, once he loaned me a sluice and I saw my first speck of GOLD, I was infected with a chronic case of GOLD FEVER lol

The friendships I've gained, the experiences I've shared with them, and the knowledge I've gained was well worth the price of admission and I couldn't imagine a better fit for me.
